Review - "90210"
Reviewer: Charise Payne Rating:
For months now we have all been hearing about the new spin off of 90210 . We heard about the drama regarding Tori Spelling and not making as much money as her other cast mates. We heard about her leaving the show, we heard about the supposed cat fights between Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth, we heard about the racy sex cast but we didn't hear about was the show. What it was about? How was it going to tie into the original series? Etc.
So last week when the show aired, I was waiting on the edge of my seat to get the freaking answers. (Of course, what I really wanted to know is what happened to all my favorite characters but I guess I will just have to wait for that storyline.) And to my surprise the show wasn't half bad. It wasn't as fun as Gossip Girl or as melodramatic as The OC but it still was charming. Especially Shenae Grimes as Annie Wilson, she was very cute and the life of the show.
The show centers on the Grimes family. They have just moved to Beverly Hills from Kansas to help take care of their ailing grandmother. The father, Harry (Rob Estes) is the new principal at West Beverly Hills High, mom, Debbie (Lori Loughlin) is a photographer, and children Annie and Dixon are the new kids in town who are just trying to fit in.
Annie has a little in with the popular kids as she has a few friends from her summers spent with her grandmother in the past. Her 'in' is a hot surfer boy named Ethan (Dustin Milligan) who she may or may not have feelings for. (Anyone else feel the Dylan and Brenda vibe going on here?)
On the kids first day of school Annie is more then excited to see him until she spots him in his car with a girl and lets just say she was making him very happy. Needless to say, Annie is mortified; she never thought she would have seen Ethan doing what he was doing especially in board daylight. To make it worst when he spots Annie and tries to make amends for hi behavior she finds out he has a girlfriend, Naomi (AnnaLynne McCord). And she finds herself thinking, what kind of guy is he? She thought he was a great guy who spoke his mind and never lied; now she is unsure.
Meanwhile, Dixon has discovered the journalism department doesn't run things quite the same as they do in Kansas. At West Beverly, they have their own talk show, TV channel, video cameras, the works; it's as if they are a little Today show in training. Dixon is overwhelmed and is taken under the wing of Navid (Michael Steger) another journalism student. He also introduces Dixon to the school sport, which happens to be Dixon specialty, Lacrosse.
As the show moves along we are introduced to the entire supporting cast including Jenny Garth as the loveably Kelly Taylor who is now the high school guidance counselor. Ryan Eggold as Ryan Matthews the hot Lacrosse coach and English teacher and Jessica Stroup as Erin Silver, Kelly's younger sister and the resident video blogger who makes life hell for those who get on her bad side.
90210 is a cute show. It will do fairly well with its target audience but for it to become a hit like its predecessor it will have to reach beyond that audience and pull in the original base as well. It's got strong competition for those viewers from House, The Biggest Looser and NCIS so it wont have a cake walk when it comes to ratings. But if your looking for something lighter and fun to watch 90210 is for you.
