Review - "Burn Notice"
Reviewer: Charise Payne Rating:
The USA Network hit its audience like a bolt of lightning with the premiere of the second season of "Burn Notice", a smart, well-written show that provides tons of action and fun for its audience.
The series stars Jeffrey Donovan as Michael Westen, a CIA operative who was given a "burn notice" — essentially blacklisting him as a disloyal, unreliable, and unemployable spy. The show tells us that when you get burned, your life changes; all your money is frozen, and you are forced to stay in the city you were burned (in this case, Miami, Westen's hometown) under threat of being killed if you leave.
One of the best parts about "Burn Notice" is that it manages not to take itself too seriously. It can have guns go off, huge explosions, and tons of action without being too depressing. The series is also sarcastic without being too silly. The fact that it manages to do this shows how great the writing is.
In "Burn Notice", Westen is forced to become private detective who isn't afraid to play with the big boys. He needs to find out who burned him to get back in the spy business, but he also has to pay the bills. His associates are his ex-girlfriend, gun-freak and former IRA operative Fiona (Gabrielle Anwar), former Navy SEAL and agency pal Sam (Bruce Campbell), and his mother (Sharon Gless). The cast is perfect, and they work great together.
This season, "Burn Notice" adds Tricia Helfer as the woman who either burned him or is working for the people who burned him (you can be sure that Westen will be getting his answers from her as soon as possible). By doing detective work, Westen gets a lot of freelance business, and the occasional morsel of information on who burned him, so he keeps going, looking to get his life back. What I want to know is: when he gets his life back, will he want it?
"Burn Notice" is a fast-paced drama that cleverly mixes these various elements into a formula the audience will love. "Burn Notice" is simply fun, and if you are like me, you will want to come back each week for your fix.
