Katy Perry is the new 'it' girl in the American pop scene. With such a famous backer as Madonna, who also back the likes of Björk, Mandalay, Goldfrapp, Gogol Bordello and Ricky Martin, Perry is shooting into the superstar universe with her newest album 'One For the Boys'.

Perry's first single, 'I Kissed a Girl', jetted to the top of the singles charts and garnered an enormous amount of press. Now her album 'One For the Boys' has done the same as she is now a dominating the international charts as well.

But is that popularity deserved? Perry is being called a ballsier, more outspoken version of Avril Lavigne, another one of the chart topping pop queens. But unlike Perry, Lavigne can sing. Perry's voice is okay but there is nothing special about it. Perry's success stems from her catchy tunes and what-the-hell-attitude which women close to her age seem to relate too.

'One For the Boys' is a bubble gum pop album. It seems to have one topic: love. Perhaps Perry's life experiences are short in the despair, loss and hate department but love as the only theme gets boring and repetitive. The songs seem to flow together as if it is one large song not an album with depth and feeling.

Perry's lyrics are ok. Some are fun and catchy others are on the verge of laughable, 'I can belch the alphabet, double don't dare me.' But every now and then a fun pop song, 'I Kissed a Girl', appears. Most of her songs are catchy and difficult not to like it. She reminds be of Madonna in a sense that you can turn it off even though it's bad; it just has that addicting quality.

My issue with Perry besides her lackluster voice is that she seems to be saying the gay lifestyle is ok and that she is uncomfortable with herself. She does a lot of this self discovery through her lyrics which is great if it works for her but I feel that her target audience needs someone to look up to not someone who says kissing a girl is cool. Also the themes feels fake, it's not like she is gay. The album feels like she is going for the shock value of being gay which in my opinion is not cool.

Katy Perry is certainly nothing new in the pop world. She is just another outspoken female singer-songwriter like Charlotte Sometimes, Lilly Allen and Kate Nash. What Perry has is the ear of the press, she has become the media darling and because of that 'One For the Boys' will continue to ride at the top of the charts.
