Love It...

Some times when you get a new CD you are disappointed, sometimes you are ecstatic; either way you never know what you are going to get until you pop it in your player and push start. So when I first listen to Adele's debut CD '19", I was blissfully surprised. Her voice is very melodic and smooth. Her voice has that unique quality which can perform blues, folk and jazz and it reminds me of a cross between Etta James and Joni Mitchell.

When Adele first came on to the scene in 2004 most people just thought of her as a Myspace darling: a talented singer who was more popular on the net then in real life. But Adele was no such thing, yes she was discovered by an A&R exec from XL but she was never very famous on the net as she had less then 10,000 friends on Myspace. Adele's success came from hard work and talent.

Adele's voice is definitely one of her talents. Her ability to control her voice is from years of training. She attended The Brit School, the Selhurst College whose alumni also include Amy Winehouse, members of The Feeling and Kate Nash. And like Winehouse and Nash, Adele vocal skills are amazing. Her ability to do a glottal stop at will and her flexibility, especially in the descending runs are spot on.

But Adele's voice is not the only thing that makes this album wonderful, her writing style and lyrics also show her talent and musical education. Adele seems to be able to write music that is a cross between blues, jazz and folk but yet it doesn't fit in any one mold. Her music is sincere and touching and in her single Hometown Glory there are moments of pure gold. I also loved the piano masterpiece Make You Feel My Love, her chart topping Chasing Pavements, and the emotional yet vocally smooth Daydreamer.

Adele has already won the praise of her native Britain as they awarded her with the Critics' Choice award at the Brit Awards and the BBC's Sound of 2008 list named her as the most promising new music talent in UK. And though I believe she deserves every award given, I hope that she doesn't get caught up in the same trappings of fame as did her fellow college chum Amy Winehouse.

'19' is a wonderful album of which Adele can be proud of. It is a strong album in which she can build a vibrant and wonderful career on. As one of my new favorites, I can't wait to see what this songstress does next.
