Review - The Veronicas

Rating:
I'm completely and totally aware of the fact that The Veronicas' sophomore album "Hook Me Up" has been out in Australia since November of 2007, but it finally dropped in the United States this week. Prior to this review, I'd already heard one of the tracks, as I am a big fan of Dean Geyer (congrats on the engagement, Dean and Lisa!), who appears in the music video. Said track is entitled "This Love", which I have been listening to on repeat for about 3 weeks now.
Based on that initial love, I expected the rest of the album to be of similar quality. I was pretty disappointed to find that a lot of the tracks were bland and forgettable. The Veronicas went with a different sound this time, and it's not necessarily bad — just different. It takes a few listens to get used to. Definitely worth a shot: "Hook Me Up", "This Love", "I Can't Stay Away" (another listen-to-on-repeat-for-hours song), and "Take Me On the Floor." On the other hand, "Goodbye to You" is repetitive (and not in a good way), and sounds a whole lot like that old Toni Basil song . . . "Oh Mickey, you're so fine/ You're so fine you blow my mind/ Hey Mickey! Hey Mickey!" et cetera. "In Another Life" is a very bland, slow ballad that lacks soul.
Good, but not excellent, and not what I was expecting. If you're a Veronicas fan, check it out.
