Review - "The Adjustment Bureau"
Reviewer: Charise Payne Rating:
The Adjustment Bureau is, at the heart of the movie, a love story. It's about yearning for the one you love and overcoming all obstacles that might be in your way.
David Norris (Matt Damon), a Brooklyn boy who came from nothing to become a respected political figure, is about to give his senatorial concession speech when he meets Elise (Emily Blunt). She’s a beautiful, charismatic, uninhibited woman who brings him back to life. Their chance meeting is brief but so engaging you feel like they have known each other forever. But after all, it is a chance meeting, and they will probably never see each other again.
Or so we thought. A few weeks later while taking a bus, a brief encounter brings them back together. It must be fate. But it can’t be, since fate is trying to pull them apart. It must be something stronger, something unknown...Is it destiny, freewill, who knows? All we know is that fate, or the men who run that department in heaven or whatever you call it, are trying to keep them apart, and David and Elise must fight against all that is real to keep their love alive.
Based on a story by Philip K. Dick (Minority Report, Total Recall), the film was made by George Nolfi, a screenwriter (The Bourne Ultimatum) making his directorial debut. The story requires you to go along with a few details that seem silly, such as hats being used to open doors and books that have a roadmap of your life in it, but that's the nature of science fiction — sometimes it takes your mind in a direction you don't expect.
Once you know how the rules of the "fates" work, watching this movie is great fun. It's really enjoyable watching David figure out how he's going to win his love for eternity.
This movie won't win any awards, and it's not going to change your life in any big way, but it is fun and entertaining. I recommend it.
