Love It!

When I first saw the teaser trailer for Up last year at Comic Con I new I would love this film. And I was right; this is an amazing film for both children and adults. Pixar has done it again; they made a wonderful emotionally filled film full of depth and in my opinion, one of their best films sinceFinding Nemo.

Up is about an old man, who is going to lose his home, due to eviction, because a development company wants his land. Carl Fredricksen (Ed Asner), the old man, decides that he is gonna keep his house and to heck with everyone else. So he figures out that if he ties enough balloons to it, his house will be flown away to safety. But there's a problem, Carl has befriended a little boy who is now stuck with Carl in his house for a very dangerous balloon ride. Of course Wilderness Explorer Russell (Jordan Nagai) has no father figure and is basically alone in his life. Both characters are lonely, a theme in most Pixar's movies, and they both need each other.

So when Carl and his unintended friend Russell go on their balloon adventure to South America, we get taken along for the ride of our lives. We get tons of fun kid-friendly characters to play with like Kevin, the giant bird and Dug, the dog who can talk thanks to a special collar given to him by his master. (I would have never bought my dog one of these collars if he's was like Dug, he won't be quite.)

Dug is lovable, I will give him that - "I was hiding under your porch because I love you!" - and Kevin is the kind of pet any kid would dream of. You can't help but root for them but with only the four central characters - Carl, Russell, Kevin and Dug - you don't get as many supporting roles to cheer for as in Ratatouille or Finding Nemo.

There is a bad guy in the film, but we never really care about him. No, it's the relationship between Carl and Russell that melts our heart and Carl's too. Through their journey Carl realizes that he really needs Russell and that Russell needs him as well.

Up is wonderful and a film that won't disappoint for the kids or the adults. I loved that it supports the truly important things in life, family, friendship, trust and love. And I'm positive, come around awards season, Up and Pixar will be nominated.
