Lover Unleashed is the newest installment in JR Ward's paranormal romance series "The Black Dagger Brotherhood". The series follows a group of vampire warriors, "Brothers", who defend their race against the Lessening Society. They are pure evil and want nothing more than to eradicate all vampires from the world. With each book, we get to know the Brothers better, but in this book, there is a twist.
Lover Unleashed is the story of Manny and Payne. Payne is a female warrior who is the fraternal twins of Vishous, one of the most deadly warriors. Payne was injured and is now paralyzed in her lower body. Vishous, a Black Dagger Brother, is extremely troubled and has issues dealing with this life-changing injury. Since he only recently found out he has a sister, this proves to be too much for him, and he becomes tormented. Feeling helpless, he takes it out on the ones he loves.
Vishous’s wife, Dr. Jane Whitcomb, a human, agrees to ask her former co-worker, Dr. Manuel "Manny" Manello to asses Payne’s injures. Since he is Chief of Surgery at the hospital and specializes in critical cases, Vishous and Payne agree it's worth a shot to allow him into their world.
At first meeting with Payne, Manny is instantly enchanted with her. Not only does he want to help her recover, but he will do about anything to make that happen, even if it means pissing off her twin. But soon, he gets pulled into the vampires' world and begins to fall in love with her. This not only threatens her life, but his as well. What will he choose: love or his humanity?
JR Ward has a writing style that instantly attracts and holds the readers captive. From the very first page, it's hard to put the book down. She doesn't sugarcoat the story, but lets it unfold as it is meant to be told, even if it turns dark or harsh. But this is why her books are so exciting and is what makes this series so successful.
Lover Unleashed is incredible, and you won't regret getting involved in the Brothers' world. This book is another great addition to a truly exceptional and thrilling series.
