Review - "Suite Scarlett"
Reviewer: Charise Payne Rating:
Suite Scarlett is a wonderful book full of intriguing characters, fun adventures, romance, and a loveable heroine who reminds you that it's okay to like your family. I loved this book! Especially the writer's witty style; her sarcasm on the page is infectious, and readers will yearn to read more.
Suite Scarlett is the latest novel by Maureen Johnson, the amazing author behind Girl At Sea, Thirteen Little Blue Envelopes, and The Bermudez Triangle. Suite Scarlett is about a fifteen-year-old girl from New York named Scarlett. She is dreading her upcoming summer, as she has to work at her family's hotel while all of her friends are traveling to Europe, playing at camp, or doing something else that Scarlett thinks is fabulous. But Scarlett won’t be doing any of those wonderful things; she gets to work at The Hopewell Hotel, her family business and home. You see, Scarlett's parents aren’t exactly rich. In fact, they are far from it. They had to let go all of their staff, and they need their children’s help to keep the hotel from going under.
As custom in the Martin family, each child is given the key to a hotel suite on their 15th birthday. Scarlett just had her 15th birthday and has been given the Empire Suite, the most beautiful yet least-used room (due to expense) in the hotel. Scarlett is excited but depressed. She wanted a job for the summer so she could afford new clothes and have money to go out with her friends, and now that she has to work at the hotel, that won’t be happening.
But little does she know that her luck is about to change. An eccentric, rich ex-starlet, Mrs. Amberson, comes to stay at The Hopewell for the entire summer and wants the Empire Suite. And even better for Scarlett, Mrs. Amberson takes a liking to her and hires her to be her assistant for her entire visit. And if that wasn’t good enough, Scarlett’s brother has been cast in a play, and his co-star is the very gorgeous Eric, who Scarlett is falling head-over-heels for.
Scarlett’s summer is now filled to the brim: with Mrs. Amberson’s off-the-wall demands, Spencer needing her help to save his show, her bratty sister Marlene needing constant care, and her too-perfect sister, Lola, who seems to be hiding something. Will Scarlett ever have time to herself, and will she ever figure out if Eric likes her?
Suite Scarlett is a hilarious and yet captivating novel. Its characters are believable and fun; so real, some of them could be your next-door neighbors. I loved its sense of family, life, and what it is like to grow up as a 15-year-old girl. Maureen Johnson delights her fans, and I can’t wait to read the next adventure in Scarlett’s life.
